RE: piggies and smog
do a quick search under Piggies in teh b5 s4 section...
ull fail bec itll give off a CEL.
but there are ways around it - relocating the 2ndary 02 sensor etc. etc.
blah blah.
but technically messing w/ any of that "emissions" stuff is illeagal.
let me know if u have trouble finding the writeups etc.

RE: piggies and smog
thanks. i did a bunch of searching. found a lot of useful info about them. but, nothing that really answered my question. the only reference to smog if found was that it "may not pass inspection". if you're referring to this article, http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng75.shtml, i've seen it and read it. but, what about the visual inspection at the smog test? won't relocated 02 sensors raise a red flag? and, thinking about it more. if it's a 8 to 10 hour job at ~$100/hr, that would be $2k to remove and reinstall for every smog check. doesn't seem worth it for what you get. i must still be missing something.

RE: piggies and smog
Well first off you gotta do it yourself to save cash secondly you have to make friends with your smog tech, and thirdly i have never really seen a smog guy climb under a car to make sure the o2 sensors were in the appropriate places.
Also by definition of the law making any modifications to your car at all is illegal. Technically when your first set of tires wear out and you have new one's put on that is a modification and according to the laws that is illegal. So really it's up to interpretation it always is. but I say do it and take your chances.

RE: piggies and smog
i would love to do it myself. however, i haven't had any practical experience beyond oil changes, replacing brake pads and a couple of fuel filters. and, i have no space at my apt to do it. and, if i have to make friends with the smog tech, i guess i better find another smog tech. :/
yeah, i've seen the whole modification arguement elsewhere. quite strange isn't it? lol.
so, basically, you're saying do it and i've got an excellent shot of having no issues. but, since i am not going to do it myself. will i have trouble finding a mech to do it?

Gilles,
If you can pass the smog test now then installing the piggie pipes
should not effect that at all. Let me know if you need anything else.
Thanks,

RE: piggies and smog
ya you wouldnt fail bec. visually ur "stock" (now gutted) precats are still in their stock place.
& u wouldnt remove & reinstall anything.. ur using ur stock DP's.
the only issue would be in the relocating (read: welding)
of the o2 sensors so that their reading the right stuff. (after the cat)
so that they dont throw a CEL which would result in the smog test fail.
