Coilover ride quality

Coilover ride quality
I have a 2005 S4, stock avus III wheels, I'd like some advice on coilovers:
I do not want to detract from the current ride quality and don't want to slam it to the ground. If at all possible I'd like to improve it. I came from and A6 4.2 sport and I'd like to get closer to that without breaking the bank.
My current stock setup is murder when it comes to imperfections in the road (in comparison to the A6). I realize that I will be looking at a minimum of a one inch drop regardless of manufacturer, and will most likely be leaving it at the highest setting.
Would different struts be a better solution? I really hate the bone-jarring, teeth-rattling reaction the car has to road imperfections.
Thanks everyone.
