RE: Wider Tires
First of all...
Welcome to the forum clarkkentva!
This is a great site. We keep the dialogue friendly and the attitude positive. The info is well received by all and we are here to help anyone with the need. I hope you find it to your liking as well.
If you're not familiar with this forum, please click the START HERE! link. There you will find a forum vocab list, an Audi forum terminology list and an Audi lexicon list. They should be very helpful to you if you're not familiar with the jargon.
Please feel free to ask any question, but double check the archives first. Many questions have been archived and, quite often, the answers are comprehensive.

245 tires should be OK. 255 tires may not fit the stock wheels properly, and, as far as rubbing... you may tempt it under extreme conditions, but probably would be OK with daily driving.

RE: Wider Tires
Thank you ImolaS4 I really appreciate it. I have searched for an answer to this question all over the net but it seems it is a topic that nobody agrees on; never an affirmative answer; always "why" "are you crazy", etc.
My reason is purely cosmetics more than anything else but I really do not want to sacrifice drivability and performance for the sake of cosmetic.
ImolaS4, when you say you would tempt it in extreme condition, are you talking about the 255 or the 245?
Again thank you for the straight forward answer.

RE: Wider Tires
David_K, where are you coming up with these suggestions?
I don't think you really know what the clearances are on the S4 - do you?
Do you know the limits for staggering the tires without affecting the suspension dynamics?
(This is separate to the fact that clarkkentva wants to mount these on his stock wheels.)

would 20's fit on my 04 S4, and what tires should i get

Why would you want to do this? It's an Audi not an Escalade.
20's will look ghetto (IMHO) let alone they will most likely rub without much cornering effort - enough said.

RE: Wider Tires
i never heard anyone ever putting 20th on the S4...
as far as i know, most of people who use S4 for racing use 18th... few 19th. i have stock 17th on my 2001, and it is already preatty harsh. i live in the NYC, so potholes are everywhere. [>:]
i heard that 2004 with 18th is even stiffer. quiet honestly, i like the way stock rims look on new S4 . i would not go past 18th even if you pay me. suicide.
