Whining & Gearbox Jerk
Hi all,
My first post as just bought my new S4 B6 on Friday! Had an S4 B5 some years ago and have been wanting a B6 for ages. Finally managed to convince the wife to allow me to get one - It's a B6 S4, 2003 with 84,000 miles.
Anyhow, I have noticed a couple of things that I'd like your help on, if you would be so kind.
When driving in all gears, there is a rather loud whine that can be heard through the rev range in all gears, it's loud enough to sound like a supercharger and it almost drowns out the engine noise I've read through some posts that say this is normal, but I really don't think it is - not this loud, anyway.
The second issue I have is with gearchange. I have a 6 speed manual - When I drive around like a granddad and try to make the journey as smooth as possible, I notice that after I have selected 2 gear and have taken my foot off the clutch the car jerks - this happens to a lesser degree in third gear and is barely noticeable from 4th gear onwards. It doesn't feel right - there is almost no way to have a smooth journey.
Any ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks very much.

Mine has the whine as well. From what I have read online, the general consistence is "that's normal they all do that". Some say it's the cam chains just making noise. However, I had an Audi specialist drive my car this week and he told me it's a common power steering noise. We made sure we were not losing fluid and added some conditioner. I'm gonna keep an eye on if for a little bit and then replace the power steering pump. You can feel it's a little tight in the wheel. I will post up if there is a change with the whine.
