I'd take the 8 over the turbo engines any day, because they put out more HP and you don't have to worry about those snails going nuclear on you.

As for your problem, the auto does have the taller gears, hence the higher RPM.

For your fuel consumption problems, don't go crazy every time you drive it. Not only does it burn more expensive gas, but puts unneccessary strain on the driveline and wears tires faster. Trust me--I also own a Porsche 944 that goes like stink if you step on it, but you run down to "E" really quickly if you do that. Just taking it easy while driving saves alot of gas and gets you where you're going in about the same time as hauling *** to the next street light. Accelerate off the light if you want, but once you get to the speed limit, let it off and upshift. You'll see your wallet getting thicker.

This is a weird question but would you mind measuring how wide the V8 is? like from the sides of each cam tower? I'd really appreciate it, I want to see about swapping and Audi motor into another car of mine. Thanks

I'll take a big 8 over your average 6 any day.
That's what she said

typically, the highway driving is going to be around 100 miles or so. For city, well, that's a different issue.

My Jag XK-8 got about the same mileage. Keep in mind that the MPG calculations that they quote was developed in the '70s if i remember correctly. Less congestion, etc so for city it was not as much stop and go as today.
my gli was accurate and that was newer than my s4.

I have a B5 S4 and I could easliy buy a 07 B6, andI have beendriven 04, 05, 07 models. While they do lookhot and have nice touque they do not perfom close to mine when it is said and done. Sub 4.5 0-60 runs are easy in the B5, I would have to go RS4 to get the same performance. And the twins are band new courtesy of CPO, they are real and fabulous with an X chip....
Just out of curiousity, is it hard to find CPO'd B5's? Im looking for a S4 Avant manual and was leaning towards the B6 because of repair costs (possible) and the great sound of a 8 over a 6.

Well, if you're worried about repair costs, keep in mind you'll spending close to double on gas with the V8.
The V8 IMO, is a much nicer ride, but the downside is the lack of an aftermarket and the gas mileage. If you don't care about that, then go for it.

(since this thread has diverted a little..i wanted to ask a couple questions)

im looking into the '07 s4 ... and all the modpossibilites for it. i currently have a 02 wrx (have had it since it'sUS debut) and altho she's my baby.. i rather go elegance/style/AND performance.... i see the gas mileage is *****... but as it's been said.. you pay more for the big boys... there's no replacement for displacement.. yah? heh.

im over turbos... well.. they're cool... but i am much more into torque than HP and i've found that no matter what, you have a lower curve when having a turbo... now i could be wrong...since i've never driven an audi.. but assuming the same characteristics apply. anyone, please chime in....

since jfelix said that he'd take older models anyday...... i question why? i don't know much... (just that i know i like the looks of the 07 better.. so aesthetics hold a good weight to my decision) but is it because it is sooo new and there aren't many mods for it yet? i do know of a ecu flash for it.. by dynocomp (local az shop) that gives it 25 more HP and 30 more torque... that coupled with exhaust, im sure gives a good feel in the butt dyno. or is it because the older ones are just sportier?

what about a comparison of a modded out a4 to a v8 s4? have any of you have personal experiences with that?

cheers in advance...

not really "worried" about repair cost but wanted to know what i can get in a B5 that makes it more attractive to an enthusiast vs a v8 "newer" S4.

you get an aftermarket when you go with the b5 s4. i am a b6 owner and while i do enjoy my car very much, i do know that the performance end of the stick rest's on the shoulders of the b5. and while someone was saying that a b6 is cheaper to repair then a b5, which i do not believe to be true when we talk stock and stock. and i am speaking from an out of warranty standpoint, it doesnt take long to get out of that little cushion. dont want to sound like a dick on my first post but the comparison to me is apples and oranges.

this is REALLY interesting because before, i would have never thought of purchasing a B5 but i'm really doing my research now!! i have NEVER owned a FI care of any caliber so my hesitation comes from the TOTAL unknown on my part. to add to that, i'm also looking for an Avant to add to the mix......[8D]
