so just how much horse do i make?
iv always been curious there is so much info on stage 3 s4's and their power but a highway pull today made me wonder about mine. I currently have a giac x chip and piggie pipes soon to have my exhaust done, while i was on the highway today i saw an sti with a carbon hood etc. Obviously mods were done to it, we eventually rolled down our windows and started talking, he had a passenger in the car and we did a pull about 65-110 we were pretty even till about 75ish maybe i didnt see the speedo when i grabbed 4th gear i pulled at least a length on him he rolled back up and shrugged his shoulders gave me a thumbs up and drove off, after talking to my friend about it he said it was a kid he knew from another town and he had a lot done to his car... Now i know sti's don't have a great top end but how much power am i putting out to hang with a modded one?

GIAC X makes something around 270whp, give or take. I can't remember exact figures.
He could have had a lot of bolt-ons but I've also seen Stage 2 S4's keep right up with Stage 2 STI's, which generally have about 300 whp. So I wouldn't be surprised if he had a tune. But it's not as much a factor of top end, considering an EJ25 is almost as big as the 2.7 and can keep the turbo in boost. What really matters are the gear ratios; STI's have tight 1st-4th gears. The S4 is stretched out a bit more but 3rd-5th have close ratios. Which just means that the ratios are meant for high speeds rather than the rally ratios on an STI.

TQ and area under the curve means just as much or more than peak HP. GIAC is pretty agressive, id be willing to bet you were misinformed and he dosnt have "alot" done to his car. I guess it depends on your interpretation, "alot" to me would mean bigger turbo, intercooler, exhaust, tune. Probably more like a retune and minor bolt ons

I was a little surprised when I pulled on an STi not long ago. I dont know if he was modded or not, but he had a hard time keeping up. No racing or anything... just cat and mouse down the highway. It DID sound like he was trying to pass me though. I wasnt even driving that hard.
... Then again, it was some popped-collar-douche looking guy in it... Wonder if that makes a difference. :P

yea my college has a lot of "popped collar douchey guys" driving sti's and evo's i see em all the time, i talk to a lot and they always make it seem like those cars are the best on earth "dude 3k and a bolt on turbo and my evo gets like 600whp" i dunno seemed kinda off to me, i think its just i was so used to hearing about these "god" cars that i surprised me haha
