Shifting problem

Shifting problem
Just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same thing.
2004 S4 6mt. Was driving this weekend and decided to try some aggressive accelerations. Car was fully warmed up. Was on a deserted back road, slow rolling start in 1st, then full throttle up to 6900 and what I thought was a quick shift to 2nd...no go...big synchro grind....I didn't force it, let it go to neutral. Decided it must have been pilot error....timing must have been a bit off.
So I tried it again, same results....
So this could be pilot error...but I'm not in the habit of missing shifts like that. Anyone else experiencing 1st to 2nd problems?

How many miles on your 04? Does the 2nd gear synchro give you a bit of trouble (seem rough) during casual shifting? Does the gear ever "pop out"? Any issues with the 3rd gear synchro?
Sorry about questions instead of answers, but I figure the more data you can provide the easier the chances of an accurate response.

RE: Shifting problem
No problem.
4k miles on the car. No problems with 'normal' shifts in any gear. Never any rough or sticky shifts. No problems with 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th.
Never pops out of gear.
Thanks!

My guess would be, there's no issues with the tranny, just not the best designed synchros... The 2000 Celica GT-S had similar issues with its 2nd gear, and so does the 03/04 Cobra (Tremec T-56 tranny)... At high RPM's, they just don't like being given the task to properly align if asked to do so quick enough...
If your synchros were going bad, you'd know... Shifting into 2nd/3rd would be a task all of its own, even at low speeds, not to mention a very noisy experience.
Be aware that most manufacturers will only cover a single instance of tranny failure due to hard shifting, at their discretion... I say this because a lot of people bank on the idea that they can beat the hell out of their trannies during the warranty period and then just get it replaced, but there's ways to tell if failure occured due to (what some may consider) abuse. Then you're stuck with a huge bill. :-(

RE: Shifting problem
I had a similar shifting problem with my '02 S4. Slowly but surely it got worse and worse, it took about 3 months to get really bad. I thought possible that it might have been an issue with my shifting. I was getting on it and shifting pretty fast, but then it started happening when I'd let a friend drive (aggresively driving). It only happened when I shifted from 1st to 2nd and sometimes when I down shifted into 2nd, but this was more rare. Like I said, eventually it got worse. The first time I took it to the dealer they could not duplicate the problem. Then after it got worse, the tech ground it leaving the dealer parking lot.
They ordered me a new tranny!
I took this opportunity to have an RS4 clutch installed! (much cheaper install time when they have the tranny out anyways)
Link is for B5 S4 only, sorry!

I read an article or link or something a few months ago, discribing this same problem, sorry I don't have it any more, but it said something about the gear or linkage developing a burr on it? If it were not under warranty, it suggested just taking a grinder and taking off the burr and that it had fixed the problem, but it said that if under warranty, Audi just replaces the tranny.
I have not gotten the car back yet, I just brought it in. I'll report more later.

RE: Shifting problem
thanks for the follow up and information. I am going in for my 5k maintenance...I'll talk to the service manager about it and do some more research online to see if I can find more on the info you guys posted.
Cheers.
