S4 with 86k miles....good buy?
After having to sell my 2001 A4 due to my "bad choices", my parents are allowing me to purchase a new car after a 8 month automobile hiatus. I was looking on autotrader for my old car (01 1.8T 5 Speed black) and i saw that since the release of the B7, prices have gone down substantially. Expanding my horizons, I looked at a 2000 S4 with 86k miles for 12k OBO. I was wondering what the longevity of this engine was and what I should expect for repair costs. Also...What are some other good cars in the 14k range if you do not think the S4 is for me. Thanks for your help!
Regards,
Danny

how would you recomend me going about the possible purchase? What percentage of these cars have bad turbos....and what is the mileage it usually craps out. The S4 I am looking at has an MTM chip.
Thanks

All turbos will go eventually. Around 100k on a non chipped car. Witha chip the wear because worse and goes faster, but thgat has a ton of factors for it. Buy it it with the intention of seeing the turbos go anytime
perhaps buy an aftermakret warranty it will definaltly be less than the cost of replacing 2 turbos plus labor (engine has to be removed)

There's no reason to believe the turbos will just go after you buy it. Honestly there is no way to predict when they will go. They can go at 80k or they can go at 180k miles, it just depends on how hard the engine has been driven. Keep in mind that people tend to drive S4's pretty hard. S4's tend to have higher repair costs in general when compared to A4's.
