Rattling/Clunking sound when in 1st gear
2002 S4. I'm starting to notice that when initially taking off in 1st gear i hear a clunking sound. not high pitched and originally thought it sounded like an empty bottle dragging along with my car. Just bought this beast 2 weeks ago with 79k on it. Only hear it in 1st gear. also noticing 1,2 gears are a little rough to get into. not always but def. noticable. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. any clue what this could be? dealer is 2 hour drive from me so im not taking it back there

1st and 2nd gears are notorious for going out. The syncros could be shot. The clunking could be from blown differential carrier bushings, differential mount bushing or both. does the clunk come from the rear?

so.... funny story. when the dealership said they checked everything when i bought it, they lied. i popped the center cap off the rear wheel and the lug nut key fell into my lap. they left it in there floating around. ******* idiots
