question for APR r1 owners
A few weeks ago i installed my new R1's (2000 S4). Since the install i have noticed a noise coming from that general area. It almost sounds like a goose. It only happens around 3-7 lbs boost than goes away.
Im guessing it may be the small amount of initial air passing through the diaphram. Kinda like filling a balloon and slowly releasing some air, only without that high pitch squeel.
I guess installing the old DV's and checking for the noise would answer my question but i figured i would ask first.
I checked for vaccume leaks and thats all good.
Is there any other R1 owners out there hearing the same noise? I live in NY so its pretty cold here. If my suspicion is correct, I would guess that a cold rubber and nomex diaphram would probably create that noise when small amounts of air move past the diaphram....as opposed to WOT when the diaphram is completly open.
any input would be appreciated

I don't own R1s but your guess sounds pretty reasonable.
But, boosted air shouldn't be getting past the diaphram if your into boost.
It should stay shut unless you've let off the gas and the valve is seeing manifold vacuum to purge excess boost.

Thanks for the replys guys. I guess the other problem could be a torn diaphram. Im gonna swap em out with the knock off forge piston types i have.
note:
I can actuate the sound. By that i mean if modulate the throttle i can prolong the noise im hearing. It sounds like a muffled vw car horn.
I purchased both r1's new from ebay. If one or both are bad i hope apr backs they're product.

I was thinking about making a tool to open the r1 up. atleast then i can inspect the diaphrams.
first things first though. I'll have to swap out the old dv's with the r1's
if the Dv's arent the issue here, any suggustions?
the only thing i can think of is a pully going bad. I have replaced plenty of faulty pullys on past cars but thats not a familiar sound.

ok ,i had the r1 dv and had the same noise. I took it back to the shop I bought them from to let them hear it. they told me that the spring was not strong enough. they put a spring from a forge 007 in it and the sound was gone. I returned them and got the forge 007`s . so i would say return them if you can or buy some new springs for them.

Update:
I just got off the phone with APR. They let me know that they had a bad batch of r1's, caused by incorrect spring rates. They're gonna fix em but i have to remove them, send em in, and wait a couple of days to get them back.
I guess its good news. Im a little bummed that i have to remove them again but hey...problem solved.
