RE: buying a 2004 S4
Hmm really, according to Carfax, this car was definitely built before 10/03, Shouldnt I worry though, because the car is still under warranty by Audi?

Just because it has an original warranty and a cpo does not mean you won't get skrewed. There is a guy on Audiworld that had his engine replaced once...then still had problems...the car spent months....months...in the shop...he had to fight the dealer and AOA. They kept trying to find the least expensive alternative to fixing problems. They would say it was fixed..he would pick up the car and within a day it would exhibit the same or new problem. he would have to drive it back to dealer, or have it towed. Even if he didn't lose any money out of pocket...he lost his car for months...and the time and agrivation of having to negotiate with the dealer and AOA.
It is just not worth it. I love my s4, they are fantastic cars but find one that was built after 10/2003. It is not worth rolling the dice on this.

RE: buying a 2004 S4
Here is a thread outlining one of the problems on pre 10/03 S4s.
I bought my exhaust system from this guy, so I know he is a cool guy and tried working with the dealer and AoA.
Edit...tried linking to the thread but it did not work...here is his thread entry:
So I got the car in October of 2003. a month or so later the car dumped all the oil and was diagnosed with a bad crankshaft seal. This was repaired in 14 days and I was back on the road. Over the course of the next year I noticed the car was loosing the bottles worth of coolant over 3-4month periods. After several times of refilling the coolant bottle and replacing lot of little parts the Dealers S4 engine specialist inspected the entire car and found a defective coolant seal in the exterior wall of the coolant jacket. The engine was removed and repaired per Audi's Guide Frame repair guide. Engine was reinstalled into car. Because Audi is to cheap to replace all the clamps and requires reuse (unless damage is noticed) during the guide frame service the hose that brings coolant to the alternator near the front bottom corner of the engine failed causing the engine to dump all the coolant and overheat. Car was stopped and brought to the dealer. Dealer pours 5+ bottles of G12 + H20 mixtures attempting to find the leap. During this process the block cracked/warped. Engine was pulled once again to verify this. New engine was ordered. New engine showed up and was installed. Car was given back to me and had a misfire condition in 3 cylinders. The injectors on those backs were replaced. Misfire condition still existed on the other 5 cylinders. Determined the remaining injectors were defective as well and replaced. Car was given back to me and the misfires were not occurring on all cylinders sporadically. All 8 injectors were replaced again. Car still misfired. Audi decided that one of the camshaft adjusters was the root cause of the misfires, not the leaky injectors as they originally though. Car was delivered back to me yesterday. After having the car for 2 hours I had logged 1000+ misfired on 1-3-5-6-7. Car is now back at the dealership.
Mind you the car had 3 visits when the dealer couldn't find any misfired (6-7 days each visit) and the other visits for misfires were between 6-10 days in the shop. The engine replacement/repairs were over the course of 45-50 days. So you can start to see how much time this car has spent at the dealership. I have logged about 5000+ miles on the dealerships loaner cars, wasted 100+ hours of my time dealing with it not to mention the stress the car has put on me (getting stranded, having to drop what I am doing to return an unsafe car to the dealer etc..) I am getting to my breaking point. I never thought in a million years Audi would put anyone let alone myself through this. Its very sad, thanks for all the support you guys have been giving me. And for those of you keeping track all my warranty work has cost 50k+ and my car has been out of service for 20% of the time i have owned the car (before this whole thing started I had 34 days of unscheduled maintenance (TSB's, Oil Leak, Coolant Leak investigation, AC issues etc..). Again thanks to all of your for the support.

RE: buying a 2004 S4
Wow, thanks a lot abacab. Thankfully, I didnt buy this car.
I was looking at a B6 2005 not too far from where I live. The car has 18k miles, 19 inch IForged wheels, and an aftermarket Navigation system. I had offered him $39.5k for it, but the seller would not let the car go for less than $40.5k? Do you think this car is worth $40k?
The car is not a CPO, but I figure that the car being a 2005, and was sold in 3/2005, I would still be covered by Audi until 3/2009 or 50k miles.
What do you guys think?
