Default K04 install recommendations

I've finally been able to order new K04s with all the necessary hardware and am pretty excited taking the first big step towards stage 3. My question for you all now is, is it completely necessary to remove the engine to do the installation? I've heard most people say yes but there are a few who claim it can be done without the engine out. There was a thread on this forum where a guy detailed how he claimed he removed and reinstalled his turbos with the motor in the car but I can't seem to find it.

I humbly ask for guidance in this situation via a little info or links to somewhere a more helpful. (the search function seems to have beaten me in this instance)

Many thanks.

I've done it by taking only the tranny out. But that's still a bitch to do.

There was an older member who once took them out from the front of the car without taking out the engine or tranny. No idea how he did it exactly. Honestly, the "safest" way to do it is by removing the engine, if you try going at a turbo bolt from an obscure angle you can risk stripping it. Almost happened with me.

I found the thread I was talking about in the original post. His small writeup is on the 3rd page.

Since it's been a few years since this was posted, I'm hoping someone else has tried it and can give some information? If not I know I will attempt it. Also if the method is easy enough, I'll try my best to take good pictures.

i remember when devilS4 posted that, wow its been a while, i havent seen him post in a long time.

Long story short, 99% of the time you just pull the motor. Very few people have done it that way, and as far as difficulty + frustration its probably worse than pulling the motor because all you have are some half *** vague instructions with no pictures. Pull the motor, it can be done out the front on jack stands.

and.. with such a big job, why would you want to half *** this??? when you have the engine out.. you can make sure you properly torque the manifold bolts, make sure that all the oil and coolant lines are properly placed... make sure and double check that nothing is in a bind.. and itll all go back together smoothly.. its just not worth it IMO... too much at risk.... just cancel 2 days and pull all nighters... youll be happy that you did it our way...

As soon as i read "unbolt turbos from manifolds, and manifolds from motor, then pull the manifolds out the front of the car" i said WOAH not even going to try that. Once the motor is out your have an infinite ammount of space around it to work, the actual motor pull isnt all that difficult, its just a whole bunch of steps.

i honestly think one could pull the engine out way faster than the alldata or mitchell quoted time, i know if i do mine again or i do one on the side for a customer ill have it done in probably half the time.. again.. its a lot of steps.. but pretty easy to do.. even if you dont drop the sub, im guessing loosen mounts, dp's, drive shaft and front axles and jank the engine/tranny out the front in one piece.. like the pic but no sub frame
