coolant maintenance question
Hey guys.... another question... i got my S4 car used... and I'm not sure what kind of coolant the last guy used.
But here's the deal... my coolant is running low.... so i pop the hood and look at the color since everyone makes such a big deal about not mixing different color coolants.... it looked orange.
So I go to the nearest VW dealship... ask if they have Orange G12 coolant... they said that they didn't have orange... they have Pink... and they also said that "G12 coolant is G12 coolant"
The guy explained to me that the color looked orange because mine could be old.
The front of the coolant shows a VW and Audi logo.... it says:
Coolant Antifreeze
Antigel refrigerant
Part no. G 012 A8FA4
Does this look safe to add? Or do I need to have someone flush my coolant and put this stuff in?

i guess i'm more worried about mixing the orange stuff i have in there now... with the pink G12 stuff i just bought...
do i need to have a mechanic flush the whole thing first?

RE: coolant maintenance question
If I were you I would have it flushed if you don't know how long it has been. That stuff always gets neglected. If it is flushed then it shouldn't matter what kind of anti-freeze you use even green stuff. They will also do a pressure test after flushing since you were a little low and you may have some sort of a leak

RE: coolant maintenance question
A related question for the group. I recently needed to add some coolant to the appropriate level. I bought some Prestone "Dex-cool" (since it was pink) and topped off the tank. After I did this, my coolant temperature guage stopped working. It has worked a few time since then, but mostly is all the way to the left. I'm not sure why this is happening since the Prestone I added said it mixes with all colors of antifreeze. The water temp seems to be fine since the heater works fine and the engine warms up normally. Any ideas from the group? Did the different brand of antifreeze affect the coolant temperature sensor?
