Default CEL P0741

Hey guys... I noob here. Just bought a 2001 S4 Automatic and had the CEL come on during my first weekend of driving. Has been driving fine with no problems shifting or getting off the line. Got the code P0741 which tells me "Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off". Anyone have any experience on what possible solutions might be? Are there any TSB's related to this issue that might cover it? The good news is the car by Massachusetts state laws has to pass inspection which it now won't due to the CEL so the dealer is responsible to fix it. And it's also cover under the awesome (sarcasim) 30 day 1,200 mile drivetrain warranty! Thanks for your help guys!

Do a search, this has been covered a few times in the past. But in a nutshell, there is a solenoid on the TC that will throw this code. It basically means you're looking at replacing the TC (or at least replacing the solenoid, but you might want to consider replacing the TC depending on mileage since it is a LOT of work to get to it) but it seems like most folks just ignore it until it HAS to be replaced (ie. symptoms like hard shifts, knocking into gear, etc...) But if it's under warranty tell the dealer to fix that ***** and get you back on the road

Thanks for the info. I have since found the TSB that relates to this but since it's not under warranty (by Audi) still they will not cover it. I have a feeling the small place I bought it from new about it and unplugged the battery before I picked it up to get the CEL off. My dilema now is they are willing to replace it but will only let they're little shop do the work. Should I trust them to replace the TC? I can't pass Massachusetts state inspection with the light on and now is the only time I could get it done for free. I just have a hard time thinking of taking a nice S4 to a place simply called Tim's to replace such a labor intensive part. Anyone have any idea how much just the TC cost? Thanks!

I got the same code 10 minutes after driving mine out of the dealer,a transmission shop told me I needed to replace my whole trans. I thought I would start by replacingjust the TC as it was the cheaper option and it turns out itwas the problem.

Replacing the whole tranny is overkill unless it's having other problems. I think you're safe if you just stick with replacing the TC.

Does the shop do good work? Do they have any reputation for working on German cars?
