Lotta posts on this, but they are all Sensors/Wiring/Chain/Tensioner related. One guy even got it by not turn the engine the correct way when setting the cams.

Almost 98% of the time when you get this or any other cam fault code, the timing is off somehow. If you can't get the timing set correctly, have a shop do it for you.

I don't know what I am doing wrong when I set the timing.

I turn the crank pulley and line it up with the TDC mark, then loosen and remove cam gears, install lock bar and retighten making sure the crank pulley is still aligned. I then turn the crank pulley a couple of revolutions and make sure everything lines back up again.

Am I missing something??

When you turn the crank while the cam gears are loose, do you have the tensioner engaged? And remember, the cam gears are supose to be just loose.

the tensioner was engaged and the cam gears were just loose enough to spin freely.

I re-did the timing a third time and this time it was absolutely perfect when it was set. I even started the car, let it run for 20 seconds and checked again. I double, triple, quadruple checked.

Looking back through this post I realize that I was suspecting the passenger side the entire time, while I should have been looking at the driver's side since the problems are coming from cylinders 4-6.

I hooked the car up to the Vag Com and it is showing one bank timing at -1 to 0 degrees, while the other bank is running -3 to -4 degrees. I understand that at idle the cams should be around 0.

I suspect that the driver's side cam to cam timing is off.

The cams have ~24 teeth on them, so that means if I move the chain one tooth, I will be looking at a change of 15 degrees (360/24), which will mean that my timing will be +11 to +12 degrees after the adjustment. I know the engine management can compensate somewhat for a slight discrepancy in the timing, however this seems extreme.

Any feedback would be great

I adjusted te cam to cam timing on the passenger side. When I monitor the cams with vagcom I get 0 degrees on each side. Now they are even but I still get a cel.

Can anybody with a b5 S4 and a vag com give me the readings from bank 090.
