I sold both of my BMW's & switched to Audi.

There faster in a straight line, and take to aftermarket parts a little better, especially the Turbo ones.

They are a lot heaver then the E36, you will feel it around the corners & braking. The steering is slower & not as responsive.

No amount of money will change that in a street car.

There also a lot harder to work on, everything is way crammed in there, Audi likes to use one time clamps & dumb clips on things.
The electronics are crazy, sensors every where.

The good. They seam to built better then the E36, they take to mods better, there is great logging & ECU software from VAG-COM.

Parts are a little more expensive, but you don't have to worry about the waterpump & radiator any more.

Overall, the quality & build is above the E36 in general, but the S4 still has it's sore spots.

Most failed parts....
DV's
Throttle body boot
MAF's
center cluster display
door lock pump
front suspension (all of it wear out fast due to the nose heavy S4)

Hey CD! What a small world!!!! Guess what- I traded in my 95 S6 Avant (which I loved) and I just picked up a 2004 S4 Avant (not with my P-loan ). Holy Cow! This is the fastest car I've ever owned, or probably driven and I am in heaven. I used to train into NYC every day and now I've been driving nearly two hours each way just so I can enjoy my new baby. This is truely a driving experience.

Not to jack your thread, but I do have a question to the rest of the Audi folks too! I've been driving stick for the past 15 years, but in this new car I can't get a smooth shift - especially in the low gears. I don't mind, but I know my wife doesn't want to feel like she is slamming gears like she is racing. Is this to be expected, or do I just hang my head in shame and go back to driving school. [X(]

Default Some V8 S4 reviews.....(Hint)...its #1

Here are some unbiased reviews of the current B6/B7 V8 S4 against the M and AMG..... The first review also talks a little about the older B5 2.7 Bi-turbo S4.

I quote C&D about the 2004 B6 S4 4.2 V8........"Of this trio, the S4 is in a class by itself, scoring the full 10 points in handling rating, 2 above the M3 and 3 above the C32 AMG. It also earned a 10 in fun to drive, decisively above the others."

Car and Driver review of the S4, M3, and AMG

Motortrend review of S4 vs AMG

The Audi S-car is the whole balanced package.
