RE: best snow tires for S4?
I subscribe to a leading consumer magazine that shall remain nameless,..... but has the initials CR. Let's not tell them that I have copied their ratings of 130-mph rated winter tires below. The ratings were updated in October 04 and some of the tires are discontinued, but there are newer versions from each manufacturer. I find the prices to be obsolete, to say the least.
I personally chose the Blizzak LM-22s for my 01 S4's stock rims. They are fantastic in the winter and I can laugh at SUV driving soccer moms who think that they have the edge in the winter. A little noisy into the spring, but if you are going to have 2 sets anyway, make the winter tires WINTER tires.
Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-2
Note: Discontinued.
$132
An excellent all-around choice. Best dry and wet braking among H-rated tires. Best ice braking without ABS.
Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2
Note: Discontinued.
$126
An excellent all-around choice, with responsive handling.
Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSport
$140
An excellent all-around choice, but pricey. Best dry cornering.
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22
$145
An excellent all-around choice. Best emergency handling.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta NRW
Note: Discontinued.
157
A fine choice for snow, though not ideal for wet weather. Least capable in wet cornering.
Michelin Pilot Alpin
Note: Discontinued.
116
Best suited to areas where snow is less severe. Quiet ride.
