Do all B6 / B7 S4's have audible engine whine? My car, a 2005MY with low miles on it has a fairly loud whine that seems to be loudest between about 2,500 and 3,000 RPM. I don't recall hearing this when I test drove the car when new, but now it seems pretty loud - especially when driving down an alley...the whine reflects off the walls and is loud!

Audi says "they all do it", and "its normal"...the service guy also said that they get alot of complaints. So I'm wondering if my situation is normal or I have a genuine problem. Any info greatly appreciated.

 

My B6 S4 is the same and is considered 'normal' by Audi[:@]

From what i have heard its the time chains that are making the noise and some people who have the earlier B6 S4, have had them replaced

If anyone asks whats the whine, just say "I got it supercharged!'

 

could be the transmission, too.

 

Forgot to ask is it Tip or 6spd manuals?

 

It's the timing chains and their location close to the firewall and it is normal. Read some of the reviews from Road and Track and/or Car & Driver and you will feel better.

 

With a nice exhaust you wont beable to hear the chains winning anymore
