B5 S4 reliability
I am looking at trading my 2.8 for a S4. I have seen a bunch of mods and everything ofr it and everything i heard makes me want it more. But what about relibilty of the car? I am proly gonna end up with one with around 60,000 mi.

RE: B5 S4 reliability
i would seriously doubt if the S4 is any less reliable than your 2.8, but you have to relaize that they are a little more complex and have more parts to wear or fail, so when the time comes it will cost more. also consider that being a car with higher levels of performance, you will probably be inclined to drive it differently that your 2.8, so that may become a factor.

Exactly. The first thing you take into account is how you drive. Clearly the harder you drive the shorter amount of time the car will last. However, having owned an S4 and driven the thing into the ground, it was pretty reliable. Second, mods always make your car more proned to breaking down. You are taking a machine and changing the way it was meant to be operated. If you buy one certified to 100K miles, thats the best way to go. Even if you chip it most dealers will sort of "overlook" the fact that your car is chipped.

the S4 is a pretty reliable car. but when those turbos go... which they will, be prepared to take the engine out to change the turbos. can't just swap the turbos with the engine in. as you can imagine... this is incredibly expensive. all audis are crazy expensive to maintain and repair, the S4 takes this to astronomical levels.

so how many miles would be to much for a 2000 or 01 s4? I am looking to spend like 17,500 (have found a couple). What should i be looking out for when looking? I want to buy one that is stock so i can do the mods and i will know if installed correctly.
What is the average mileage before the turbos will go?

There is no average when the turbos will need to be replaced. Some have a history of failing within 40K while others are still going after 100K. It's all dependent on their use and abuse.
To buy a 2000 from a dealer for under 18K will require its mileage to be greater than 75K - that's provided the car is clean, without any other issues, and it does not have any options.

Sounds good, provided all else is equal (as I said before).
At 60K, you should have the timing belt replaced, if it hasn't been done yet - EXPENSIVE!
And, of course the ol' tie rod and control arm question needs to be addressed, too.

yea i know but i haven't been able to find how much that will be. Exactly. Although i dont have all the money yet so i need to wait a few more months. Will the timing belt being replaced cost the same as it was on my car?
