Another Successful AVIC-D3 Install
List price is $999 plus $130 for the blue tooth module. Best buy had a kit including the blue tooth for $699 and I talked the salesman down another $25. What a bargain because this thing is very cool. It is all in one navigation, FM, AM, XM, Sirius, BT-TEL, BT-Audio, back up camera, DVD, and CD. I won't bore you with the DIY because there are several good ones out there. I would like to point out some discrepancies in the information I got from Crutchfield and Bestbuy.
The accessories you will need for a B5 S4 are: 40-VW54 antenna adaptor,a 120869001 din tool. This comes with 2, but you need 4. I only ordered the 1 package and cut the multi tool in half to give me 4. The other end was for Mercedes and was close enough that it just slid right out. You need a 120701787 harness with a high level and low level connector if you have the Symphony. And finally you need a 120999105 dash trim kit. Contrary to some DIYs I read, thisworked perfectly and didn't require any modification. Maybe they updated the kit.
Now, Crutchfield told me I needed the 40-VW10 antenna adaptor, but this didn't work because our cars have powered antenna amps and require a 12V injection. I already had the VW10 so I just cut into it and soldered a wire to the 12V antenna power control.
I also did the modification to allow navigation while driving. This is a must. I'll be damned if I'm going to stop and put on the parking brake to navigate.
I'll post some pics in a little while.

I think it's just a liability issue for the navigation companies. From what I've read, it isn't against the law. Here is a link to the bypass. It also let's you use it for DVD while you travel too. This is helpful when I bring my kids. http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4670

RE: Another Successful AVIC-D3 Install **PICS**
Here are the pictures. Sorry, but the car is a little dirty. I took off the pioneer logo on the bottom edge with some acetone to make it look a little more stock.
