has anyone done it???? I am in the process but have a few questions.

well in a nut shell I bought the car for 5k it had bad synchros 1-3 a complete rebuild is 1200. I got a 5 speed trans out of an A4 for 250. PLus the 5 speed is alot more durable then the 6 speed. 6 Speed are notorious for the synchros going bad so why deal with it. Plus, I will get a faster acceleration.

 

Your fuel economy will suffer, but its an interesting idea. Did you get the 5 speed from the 1.8 or the 2.8? The 2.8 has a much higher gearing than the 1.8... if you had a 2.8 to put in you would get some serious acceleration to 120 mph.

 

I am not so much worried about the fuel economy. ANd the trans is out of a 97 A4 2.8 so yeah it will be quick

 

Thats good, although, I guess you would be even quicker in the 1.8 but you would be changing gears so fast I don't think you would ever get to feel the s4 pull
