2001 S4
Hey - I recently acquired a 2001 S4, and I was wondering if you all could help out on what the best mods for autox would be. Its about to be chipped, but as far as mods for the S4 i'm pretty out of it. (All my friends have mustangs, all they do is throw in nos and wait till the engine blows). Thanks!

RE: 2001 S4
For auto-x:
1. Get a performance suspension and a 19mm rear sway bar.
2. The brakes are pretty good as they stand, but I'd change the pads to a better grade.
BTW: Get new DV's because the chip will put a higher demand on the stock DV's.
Here's the latest info on DV's that I keep compiled for informational purposes:
DV's:
AmD Viper = Polished chrome version of Bailey DV with AmD logo, $$$ (see "Bailey" below)
Bailey = Probably the most popular, serviceable, $$$
Evolution Motorsports = Cosmetic, 4 color anodized choices, not serviceable, $$
Forge = Large (may have fitment problems), serviceable, $$
Forge Race = Larger than others (see above), adjustable, serviceable, $$$
GFB Stealth FX D-BOV = Exclusive unorthodox design, externally adjustable, tight fitment, not serviceable, $$$$+
Hyperboost = Cosmetic package, not serviceable, $$
Hyperboost Adjustable = New, cosmetic package, may not fit S4, adjustable preload, not serviceable, $$$
Hyperboost HX = Newest, very cosmetic package, new internals, not serviceable, $$$
OE Bosch TT 710A = THE STOCK DV FOUND IN ALL (1997 AND UP) AUDI TURBO MODELS, Audi part # 034-145-710A OR 06B-145-710, $
OE Bosch TT 710N = Basic, popular & low-budget upgrade, maintains stock look, not serviceable, Audi part# 06A-145-710-N, $
OE Bosch Sport 110 = MTM upgrade, same as 710N with "better" internals, not serviceable, $$
$ = under $50 USD
$$ = $50 - $150 USD
$$$ = $150 - $250 USD
$$$$ = Over $250

RE: 2001 S4
what is wrong with nitrous!! why dont you just get nitrous too then
All my friends drive mustangs too, small world. Id get it for my S4, but I don't feel like having my car confiscated if it is discovered, so Ill stick to good old FI.
For autocross though, more power is always better. Go check out HKS turbos for a nice performance upgrade. How much power are you laying down now? Keeping in mind that the tranny GO BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM at 370 whp

Yeah, i know tranny go boom. I was prepared for that, which is why new tranny is next mod.
Right now i'm laying down around 350 hp.
She's handling great!
Thanks guys

Huh??
Forget NOS unless you want to do serious mods to the engine management.

RE: 2001 S4
Oh, I never wanted to do NOS! I think its probably one of the worst ideas my guy friends are doing.
Anyway, I'd LOVE to see the chip that ups power to 350 alone. But sadly, until its made, no I dont have 350 with just a chip. See sig for full list.

RE: 2001 S4
IMHO NOS is a bad idea because 1) its illegal and 2) it will destroy your engine.
Plus, where I live, any modifications on your car is illegal, and if say you and your friends are sitting around eating and your modified cars are outside, and someone happens to have a potato shooter sticking out of their rear skirt, the cops will wait for you and pull ALL OF YOU over. Yeah, that sucked. But they couldn't prove anything on me, just gave some tickets to friends for illegal exhaust/tinting. they're dicks.
So I woudln't do it. Plus you can put NOS in anything and make it fast.
I could put a couch on wheels and NOS it and it would be fast. And fun!

RE: 2001 S4
Here's a more relevant reason why NOS isn't such a good idea....
Wet or dry systems have different yet inherent problems. NOS, in general, requires a lot of supportive modification. You will need to add the NOS before the MAF for proper readings which, in itself, is an unorthodox method of NOS injection - it poses additional problems. Of course injectors need to be upgraded, etc.
There is a lot to do - I wouldn't opt for it unless you are tech heavy with NOS. It has been done by some people with a lot of tuning experience and with NOS experience.

RE: 2001 S4
Thats interesting, Reston Cops arent bad about it at all..... And none of my friends have been pulled over. As for the Nitrous argument, with enough fuel, there is minimal risk of puddling and detonation. IF you run the adequate supporting mods then you will be perfectly fine. And I know of many good tuners that have experience with nitrous.
