2000 S4 Front Mount Intercooler (FMIC)
I've had my S4 for 1 entire day, and already lining up my mods. Sick, I know!
Anyway, does anyone have any firsthand experience with the Duh FMIC as sold through Achtuning for $2,200. They claim some pretty decent HP gains both chipped and unchipped.
Is there noticeably more turbo lag with this intercooler, and is there any loss of low end torque. I enjoy the low end pull of the S4, and do not want to lose that at this point.
Lastly, what can I expect to pay to have this intercooler installed.
Of course, first hand experience is greatly appreciated, and any other input is gladly accepted.
Thanks in advance,

FMIC? comeon man. nobody can give accurate HP gains with a FMIC it all depends on how much air is flowing through the intrercooler and there is a lot more air going through at 100 mph then there is from any dyno fan. some companies test the FMIC in a wind tunnel to inflate power gains. unless your driving 200mph and the wind is blowing against you at 400mph you wont see those numbers they quoted you.
Start with a chip. and dont cheap out get an expensive one. The one rule with audis is the more money spent on a part the better the part will be. Look to Dahlbach racing. www.tjmmotorsports.com

Regarding the topic at hand, the increased surface area of the FMIC cannot be denied, and the added heat sink capability is no doubt increased over the S4 and RS4 intercoolers. More heat exchange equals cooler intake temps, equals more HP.
Again, is there any increased lag with this setup, or decreased low end torque due to larger intake volume. Does anyone have this setup, and wish to comment? Another thought, does the FMIC negatively impact radiator cooling or the AC capability?
I'm not looking to change intercoolers this week, month, or even year. I am just getting an idea as to my options to formulate a plan for my new to me S4.

I dunno, the guys on Audiworld seem to think around 20 HP during heat soak. A FMIC doesn't give you more HP, it just keeps you from loosing it. So if you are sitting at a traffic light and it's 100 degrees out, you won't be as burdened by heat soak. You may loose a tiny amount of low end torque.
I think you should install dual k04 turbos, DUH FMIC, and a chip. 450 HP should be fun right?

On the issue of turbo lag, its all relative. only you can decide if it decreases turbo lag or increases it. Yes a front-mount is a good investment but not at your point in tuning. 2200 is way to much for an intercooler. for 2200 you could swap in K04 turbos and a RS4 intake manifold. This will give you an incredible power gain and b/c of the supirior efficiency of the RS4 manifold you will gain an incredible amount of torque.
As for intercoolers. I would take the time this weekend to clean them out. it is very simple and as a result you will gain back the horsepower lost from a dirty intercooler. i will post a post in the General Tech on how to clean out the intercooler. Meanwhile i highly recomend this.
BTW if you are planning to swap to an RS4 front bumper contact me as i am in the market for a S4 bumper.

Ive seen them on EBAY for about $220.00 (not a kit just FMIC). But they have pictures of one already mounted.... Hope this helps.....

I got a fmic intercooler on my s4 if you want ill post some pics with this post. I think its a bit laggy but once you start gettin up to 70-80 miles per hour you start to reach higher boost levels. The front mount was real big though I had to get my rs4 front bumper custom fit to it. check it out if you have ne more questions let me know and good luck!

Do not get the DUH fmic, DUH went out of business a little while ago so if there are any problems you are Fed... If you want the power route go with the SMICs AWE sells, or wait for the autospeed performance fmic to come out which is supposed to be the equivalent of 4 rs4 SMICs.
BTW: i havent posted for a long long time on here because i got logged out and have been too lazy to log back in for a month or so hehe
