I bought my first one used then sold it never had a problem. Bought another one because I missed Forza 2. Still working good. This one is a refurbished one though and is louder then my tv speakers..... they upgraded the fans its annoying as ****.

Mine got one "ring"/E-74 error which relates to the AV processor. It started cutting out audio (HDMI) and then checkerboardish red squigily lines blanketed the screen until a couple restarts later the red light showed its ugly face. 2 weeks out of the 1 yr waranty! I'll probably have to pay $100 to get it fixed even though I told them it had the rrod in the repair order. We'll see if they notice.

The first one I ever bought gave me the same error you're describing. But unfortunately, my first 360 never technically red ring'd. Therefore they wouldn't fix it for free. I went a long time without a 360 and only recently purchased a used one that's been doing quite well since.

There was a misconception that the elites are rrod proof. They are not. The reasoning was that the newer chipset was used with xbox's that come with an HDMI out (Elite and later Pros). Well the newer chipsets (falcon and jasper) do help cut down on rrod caused by the cpu/solders, but the gpu chipset went unchanged and that does not cause rrod, but a single or 2 rings that is only covered under the 1 yr waranty. I HIGHLY reccommend if you get an xbox to pony up the extra $25 for the store waranty. That way you can just exhange yours for a new one at the store.

i had the exact same problem, E-74 and the checkerboard on the screen Mine too happened just days after the warranty expired. fancy that! I had a very colorful conversation with the customer service agent, because while my warranty for all problems was expired, the add-on warranty for the 3rod was still intact. I questioned the rep saying "so if you have the 3rod, the xbox will not turn on and you have a useless brick which is covered under warranty, right? well If you cover the processor melting down, why wont you cover the gpu melting down and turning my system into a white brick?"
that mixed with some other french got my repair bill down to $50 and a year's subscription to xbox live :]
for those who have E74 and are computer repair savvy, there are plenty of DIY fixes out there (search for X-Clamp fix) if you dont wanna give another bill to M$

i had an rrod on mine... i didn't want to send it in again, so i cracked it open and did it myself! If you don't have a warranty, or don't care for your warranty, check out the eraser fix... its pretty simple, although i think it might only be for over heating issues..
