Would you...

RE: Would you...
Even if it needs more work, parts are dirt cheap for the Miata. For example, an OEM clutch plate is $50. $50! I could replace that thing on a bi-monthly basis and not cry about it! The trunk is jammed, too, and I'm going to have to pop that open to get to the battery, but I love fixing cars

Scary is right.
What you're talking about would ruin the whole purpose of the car. Monster Motorsports in Escondido Calif. dropped in 302's (with quite a bit of modification / fabrication), and they BARELY fit. You would have to virtually re-engineer the whole front structure of the vehicle to get a 427 to fit, and then what would you have? - -- A small car with a big engine that won't handle.
With the rotary, you don't really need the torque - car's light already, even lighter with the rotary.

screw rotary's go big or go home with a shoehorned 427
but in all honesty I like rotary engines minus their lack of torque. But can you imagine a 427 in there, the thing would be so scary fast.

On kind of a similar note, I have a 1979 MGB sitting in my dad's garage (it was my first car ever). It runs, but last I checked it needs brake work. I've always thought it'd be fun to buy anold E26 BMW for cheap and swap the I-6 engine/drivetrain from the Bimmer into the MG. German Engineering + British Styling = Fun!
