This forum has made you too defensive.

Wikipedia... ...not always a credible source.
^^ That ^^ was what I was responding to, agreeing that wiki isn't always a credible source, and therefore, my OP shouldn't be taken as hard fact. Its potentially someones 'version' of history, just the same as the Oettingertanica version (which kicks ***, btw) could be taken as truth to someone who doesn't know any better... because those people do exist...

You have to **** talk my mother, my car, or paintball for me to get offended. Stay clear of those topics, and I guarantee there is nothing you can say thats gonna get me worked up.

Basically, Audi 80 and 100 got redesigned.

'S' cars existed as sport versions of standards cars from earlier years (The S line 100 was the Audi 100 S4.)

Now, the A4 was a new car, the A6 was a facelift of the Audi 100. As the name S4 was now earmarked for a performance version of the A4, the updated performance version of the A6 became the S6.

So basically, instead of having an Audi 80, and an Audi 100, and an Audi 100 S4, why not just call the standard package A4 (new car, 80 dropped), and A6 (Audi 100). To designate the sport package, we'll change the A's to S's, and have S4's and S6's, since the sport designation seemed to work already.

Make sense?

****, well, actually that still doesn't really explain why its an A, except its a standard (read: basic) package, and if you're staring at the beginning, why not start at the beginning of the alphabet?

So I guess its still just a guess, but I did explain the structure of the current lines....
