Where did Audi come up with it's names?

Default Where did Audi come up with it's names?
Me and my friend have been searching the internet for the reasoning behind the most recent model names.

S and RS we get, but its mostly the A3, A4, A5, A6. I learned that the S4 had to be moved to the S6 after issues with US sales but I never could figure out why they chose A and it's driving me insane.

I tried searching the thread for it and came up with nothing.

yeah, my car is the result of the s4 -> s6 switch

but i'm just taking a wild guess here

S = Sport
RS = Renn Sport
A = Auto (Automobile)

the only thing i noticed about audi naming is that they are one number higher then BMW

A4 > 3 series
A6 > 5 series
A8 > 7 series
