What do you carry?

If you have to ask it probably isn't. Walther generally makes a good pistol and the P99 is a .380, right? That's a good little plinker or perfect packin' pistol. I don't know too much about the Desert Eagle but since it's in .357 mag, which is a long casing, I hope you have big hands.

The P99 is a very well balanced gun available in a couple of different frame, trigger, and caliber combinations. P99C's are compact with a shorter barrel, and they come in 9mm and .40cal and the fullsize is also in 9 and .40. If you want it in .45, you can get a SW99 which is a P99 frame with a Smith and Wesson slide. Very reliable, no matter which caliber or slide on it, but I'd suggest getting the D/SA instead of the Quick Action or DAO. The D/SA has a very quick and short trigger pull in single action, and a nice stiff pull in double action. They do not have a safety, but they do all come with a manual decocker. They are pretty accurate, and come with adjustable back straps for all hand sizes. You can't go wrong with either the SW or the P, because they are very reliable, easy to use, and with the built-in rail on both, you can put all sorts of goodies on it. The P99 can have a threaded barrel, as well, whereas the SW99 has a larger, curved trigger guard which is great if you have gloves on and like to double finger your trigger.

my wife's not so tough - but that's why she has me I suppose
Seriously going to look into the Walther - I like the grip configurations and the high marks on accuracy it gets.
The Eagle just looks damn nasty

The .44 is like a Mustang Boss 427. Lots of powder pushing a heavy round. The .357 is like a Golf that some genius decided to put a W12 into. Same bullet as a 9mm with the powder from a 10mm pushing it. It's ungodly fast and the most devastating small round against body armor because it's just has so much energy. But, it will wear down your gun faster, due to very heavy recoil and it chews up barrels faster than .45 ACP because it's essentially a very very hot 9mm
