You know someone with a quad or dirt bike? That could help you learn how the whole process works & have fun. This is how i learned before i could drive.
Find someone with a liter sport bike. I think that's a good way to start
No, but the ATV is a good idea...it will give you the concepts needed...

I agree with the few other people above. Take someone with you to pick up the car who can drive a stick, and then when you get home, have them teach you. As long as you understand what you're doing - its not all that tough to learn.... It'll take a while to get good at it, but not long to learn how to drive it...
You'll regret not doing it...when you drive an automatic, you don't notice it because your used to it. Drive a stick for a while, and then go to Auto, and you'll hate it. You'll hate not having complete control of your vehicle. Tedious in traffic, yes- but worth it.
Good luck!

My dad taught me like this:

1. Start the car, push the clutch in & put it in 1st.
2. Let the clutch out slowly and kill the car. (yes kill it so you know were the gas needs to be applied)
3. Repeat the 1st step, then let clutch out slowly and applysome gas. Away you go!

It's simple just get the car home with the help of afriend, and you will see that there was no need to worry.

golden rule on manual transmission,

1st is just to get you moving and maximum 20 mph,
then into 2nd,
then at 30 mph its 3rd,
after that its open road driving 4th 5th and 6th if you have it then at speed use the gears to slow you down ( keep the car under the speed limit while driving ( slow speeds help you learn quicker )

Good rules to follow.

Personally, I do not believe that bikes are the best way to go in order to learn unless you have a death wish. IMO.
Do not rev too high, it is going to make the shifter harder. Try to remain in the appropriate gear so that you have enough power to speed up or brake, the braking power is going to be a lot better if you are in the proper gear. Also, in doubt, use the clutch a little bit more than you should. Not the best thing to do,I know.
If you do not have any friend's car to practice on and cannot rent one - there are some available but usually in the specialized rentals but you should go with someone else so they can take the car out of the lot... There are also classes available.

Anyway, it is a good skill to have. I love my MT and decided against the DSG although these people will be faster, the control is good, the Audi MT is a little long for my taste but it is still pretty smooth.

Cheers

Who cares if you screw something up. its part of the joy of owning one of these cars.
No offense but your car is quite a bit older. Honestly if I could find a really nice certified B5 I'd consider it and then I would have no problems going a little bit rough on it. When I first get the newcar I want to treat it more like a luxury car than sport I.E. going very easy on it. And I'm all on my own when it comes to flipping the bill on expensive repairs.

With that said my father and I decided that I'll just learn on the new car with my uncle who will drive it from the lot. Now I just need to decide whether or not to lease.
