For Mom

Today is the most special of days
One thousand million ways will be found to try our very best to say
Words that we should all be saying everyday
Words that weigh so little, and so much when they contrive to betray
How much a simple sentiment has become a cliché
A casual phrase we use to say the same things that everyone we meet will say
It should be different it seems, somehow, today
But there’s no real new way to find these days a fresh display
On this, the most special of days
Off to the malls, off to pay off the guilt of neglect we try not to display
For the previous three-sixty-four other days
With heads held high we spend and pray our gifts and gestures allow us to pay
Off the guilt and guile we feel and use, and yet betrays
The kids inside us, each and every day, wishes we could turn back the days
Of the hugs and kisses and praise you freely gave away
Hurts fixed and back out to play, back out the door and not a “thanks” did we say
We had to get back out, too anxious to stay
And take a moment to say those words we try our best to buy off, today
But, it’s Mom, she understands, in Her way
That, no gift, no gesture, no amount of pay can could ever come close to convey
The fullest effect in any real way
I just wanted to say, “I Love You Mom” on Mother’s Day.
