Some Questions For My Project-Industrial Design
I am in the process of creating a hard shell backpack for my Industrial design class and have a few questions concerning the design. If you have a spare minute please answer the following.
1. What do you normally carry in your backpack?
2. What is your primary use?
3. What is your biggest concern when buying a backpack?
4. Would you pick a backpack based on how it looks?
5. Have you ever dropped your backpack and had something break.
6. What don’t you like about the design of backpacks?
7. What would you change about backpacks?
8. How often do you carry a backpack?
9. How much weight do you usually carry.

1. What do you normally carry in your backpack? Big Books, cigarettes, a couple pencils, spare change...an 18" ruler for art....
2. What is your primary use? the big pocket to get books out of (school)
3. What is your biggest concern when buying a backpack? if everyone at my school will have the same freakin one
4. Would you pick a backpack based on how it looks? yes, that's usually the deciding factor
5. Have you ever dropped your backpack and had something break. no...but my books get a lil bent out of shape
6. What don’t you like about the design of backpacks? mine has a breast and stomach latch/clip...they are not needed...
7. What would you change about backpacks? how heavy they are, I would rather pull a rolly one...but then all the other kids would make fun of me...lol
8. How often do you carry a backpack? every tuesday and thursday from 8-5
9. How much weight do you usually carry. I try not to exceed 15lbs
10. How long do you carry a backpack? 5-15minutes before and after all 5 of my classes
11. Do you find your backpack uncomfortable? no, it's got some nice padding
12. What would make it more comfortable? less weight and more padding....

2. What is your primary use? - getting things from point a to point b
3. What is your biggest concern when buying a backpack? - price, many are way overpriced!
4. Would you pick a backpack based on how it looks? - If it looked good enough, then yes
5. Have you ever dropped your backpack and had something break. - Not that I know of
6. What don’t you like about the design of backpacks? - sometimes the outer pocket is too big and if you put anything in it it makes the whole thing sag, making it look huge
7. What would you change about backpacks? - give all of them wellpadded straps
8. How often do you carry a backpack? when I'm in school, a lot. otherwise i use it to take things to the gym and back
9. How much weight do you usually carry. - depends on what class i'm going to
10. How long do you carry a backpack - could be hours, depends on what the situation is
11. Do you find your backpack uncomfortable? - when it is brutally heavy, yes
12. What would make it more comfortable? - memory foam? a hot chick that popped out and walked with you whenever you wore it?

most of those questions don't apply to me, I don't use a backpack.
I will give my input though.
If I WERE to use a backpack, it'd be for travel. I use a duffle bag now for trips, sometimes its a bit much. Also attempt to strap it to my quad if Im going waay out in the woods to camp, and I wanna bring a bunch of stuff. So, it couldn't be bulky for me to use it (gotta go somewhere on the plane) (and not get in the way offroading), and focusing more on my second use, water resistant, and easy to clean. If you're doing a hardshell, it'd be cool it it were damn near water proof, and would float. Looks don't matter very much to me, but black is always in. Maybe a touch of CF if you wanna get fancy ; )

Hard shell meaning made out of plastic and always the same shape and size? Personally I wouldnt buy a backpack like this because sometimes I only need a notebook along with some pencils/calculator; In this case my back pack now would be small and I could stuff it between things... sayyy, in a car if space is limited. If its a hard shell it would always be the same bulky shape with 0 give.
Just a thought... but good luck sounds like a fun project!
