I just got woken up by the sound of breaking glass...I can hear the wind and things being flung around side through the double pane glass and brick. This is scary. Obviously, we still have power here at 3:55 am, but I expect that that won't last.

We still have power, but apparently downtown suffered extensive damage. Someone told me that all the windows on one side of a high rise down the block blew out, but we're still locked in the hotel so I haven't been able to check it out (not that I want to be outside anyway). It looks like we're not going to be allowed out and I've already committed to staying here tonight to open the restaurant so I don't know. My mom said that her house is okay minus the fence and one window on her porch and that's some comfort because her neighborhood was supposed to be the hardest hit (outside of the evacuation zone). No idea how my house is, but I think it'll be okay, too.
Here's what I can say about all of this: hurricane tips FTW.

So, water has been coming over the seawall in Galveston all day...that seawall is as high as 20 feet above the beach in some places and the storm is still like 12 hours away. I saw neighborhoods flooding because of the surge at noon yesterday. I'm not easily offended and I generally like tasteless jokes, but for whatever reason, I'm really turned off by thems jokes! Show some class fellas, there's no party here.
With candles and flash lights, sounded like a party too me.

I walked around downtown a little bit. It's bad. I don't know what I was expecting, but it's really upsetting to see.
These pictures were all taken from the same corner. I took the first one yesterday when I was marveling at how deserted downtown was. The other two give you a little bit of an idea of how much damage there was even though our block escaped relatively intact.
