Q: what are the hood pins for? purely for looks or do they serve some function?

hood pins come from race cars who use them for easy/fast access to the engine bay...they are completely useless on any street car..unless you get a super cheap carbon fiber hood with no mount for a hood latch, but i'm pretty sure all cf hoods for audis use the oem latch

i really like it accept for the hoodpins and CF hood. i love the styling of the b7, they just keep getting better, if i wasnt doing this dealership thing i would totally go out and buy one.

The hood pins are also about not having the weight of a hinged mechanism for the hood. You don't raise the hood, you remove it. I think that Corvette did a similar weight reducing move with the doors on the Z06. Every little bit helps. But like Bent said, if it's for look only then.....

Not exactly. There was a guy on audiworld who didn't use pins. The hood popped open and smashed his winshield and caused a large amount of damage. You really need them with a CF hood. Yeah they look stupid though.
