Yeah and your budget allows for a B6 (2002+) A4... which drive a lot nicer than the B5 cars. If you can find an 04, they are 6 spd... but regardless, an 02 or 03 A4 would be awesome. And yes, a great platform to mod.

You've convinced me to go A4...is there a mileage that the turbo generally dies at?

Umm, not really... a stock A4 can go 200K miles I bet on its original turbo... a chipped one could likely go 100K miles post-chipping. However, it doesn't really matter... as the stock K03 turbo is easy to find used, and dirt cheap! They are very easy to replace, too... lots of room to get at it, no motor pulling required!

Tell you what when you find one that you like, post a link to a new thread asking about it. Many of our members are quite knowlagable about diff things to look for, and will be able to help you out on a more specific level with that perticular car.

Quick question: I'm really torn between a 2001 and 2002 A4. I know you guys say the B6 rides better and is generally nicer than the B5, which it should be since it's a redesign, but I don't know if I prefer the looks of the 2001 or 2002...Is there really just a 20 hp gap, approx. 150 compared to 170 for the 2002 A4? I like the idea of a 2001 because then I'd have some extra cash for a set of Oettinger RE's. Again, thanks for replying and forgive my ignorance, I just want educated opinions.

as far as the hp numbers I really don't know. The B6 is biger on the inside and even thou I'm parsial to the B5 the B6 is a great car.

Well, for starters... 01's have the same 1.8T -- 170 hp in an 01 (that's why they have the little red slash on the '1.8T' rear badge.
Also... there's definately nothing wrong with an 01... we all love b5's! B6's are a better car, if you ask me... and Oettinger RE's get boring after a while Definately nicer wheels for the A4 out there!
I think the most serious problem with 02 a4's is that they eat light bulbs (rear brake/signal lights) quickly. B5's are comparitavly reliable, but have the control arm issue...

I dunno, I'd go B6 if I were in your shoes, throw some 19" RS4 replica's on it for cheap, and have a bad *** car.

i have a 2001 a4 1.8t and personally prefer it over 2002-2005, it also rides quite well, just make sure you get the sport suspension. they also seem to be about 5k cheaper comparatively priced.
