I bought a 3 1/2 ton jack and four 3 ton jack stands from Harbor Frieght. They work great on my A4 Quattro. Held up my car for a week and didn't cost much at all. Actually. That is the only place I buy hydraulic tools from. Need to go back and buy a small bottle jack to keep in the car since that stock one can't be trusted IMO. You all know which one I am talking about? It opens like half a scissor jack. I never trust a peice of wood.

^ I'd sooner trust a piece of wood than the half scissor jack that comes with our cars.

The only use for a scissor jack is lifting the car up a bit if you have a low car to get a real jack underneath

I can put one wheel on a curb and tri-pod the car.

NO jack FTW!

I have a low profile 2.5 ton jack that gets the job done nicely. you may want to look into one of those.

getting under your car without jack stands supporting it is dumb, man. even with a good floor jack holding it up, you're still putting your safety in the hands of a hydraulic seal... not a good idea.

it sounds like you've learned from this though, and you didn't learn anything the hard way, which is even better.

You can even be ghetto and use wood blocks to get the car higher before you jack it up.

That's what my friends do since they don't have low profile jacks.
