wihtout any thrust yes you would move backwards. If you applied equal force as the belt is able to apply to you you would remain stand still. if your thrust force is greater than the belt...you will move forward.

correction to what you said.. thrust force is greater then THEN BELT CAN APPLY TO THE PLANE. Like i said, just cause the belt is matching the speed of the plane does not mean its matching the force of the plane....... what the belt can apply to the plane has a limit. Which is equal to the Rolling resistance

rolling resistance = crf * w. Working it out on a 747.. rolling resistance = about 10,000lbs of force. a 747 produces over 200,000. Nowhere close to matching it.

The belt would have to be moving roughly 20 times faster than the plane. 150mph take off speed a belt would be moving 3000mph, what mach is that??

Since it is moving the same speed in this problem it is not enough to keep it stationary.

 

ok so if you just set the plane down on the conveyor belt with it moving backwards at the speed it takes for the plane to take off the plane would move backwards, just not with nearly as much force as that applied by the eninges as soon as you turn them up to takeoff speed. right?

You are all forgeting that the tires have a max speed not that much faster than the speed of takeoff. so your kinda fecked right off the bat.
