Riddle time! Airplane vs. conveyor

RE: Riddle time! Airplane vs. conveyor
o haha i just got it!!!!!!! YES IT WOULD TAKE OFF. the conveyor belt would be moving the wheels but there not connected to any driveshaft or anything so the jet would start propelling itself forwards. only the wheels would be moving backwards.

even though there is a correct answer, this is heavly debated on the internet usually, and in all cases i've seen, at least 60-70% of people insist on the wrong answer, even after its given.

actually the wheels move forward at double the speed of the plane, not backward. but you're right.

Lets say you have an airplane sitting on a conveyor belt. As the airplane fires its engines and starts to move forward the conveyor belt matches its speed in the opposite direction. Question is will the airplane take off? Yes or No? and why? There is a correct answer.

well its not really a trick question in the aspect that it gives the answer in the question.. but like you already said.. most think that the plane is driven through the wheels like a car.. the wheels will spin at 2x their normal rate as the plane moves down the runway and takes off like normal.. ive actually debated this question for near a year on a physics forum. you wouldnt believe how stubborn some people are or the arguements ive seen.. ive actually had to use real numbers and physics equations and draw free body diagrams to people and yet they still dont believe it.
the physics forum is actually almost at 400 pages.

great [&o]
I dont get it...
how can it take off the planes not actually moving? it would be standing still right?
btw - im not debating it.. just want to be informed...
knowing is half the battle !
