3 on each side... discard the lighter ones...

pick 2 off the heavier side, and balance them... if one is heavier, it is that one... if they balance, then it is the 3rd of the heavier 3, that is not on the scales... if you know what I mean....??

You can use this method for a ighter ball too. Not ure how to o it if you don't know if it is lighter or heavier...

Yup..you got it. Sorry I was not clear in the beginning. I thought about it for a while and then realized that you needed to know if it was lighter or heavier. It has been awhile since I told anyone that.

ORIGINAL: Toff_the_Toffee

Put 2 ***** on each side... if the balance right, then you know it is one of the other 2 ***** that you have spare. weight them... one will be heavier, the other.. If it doesn't balance frst off....
erm.. need more thinking time...
Three ***** each side...

won't balance...

one side will be higher...

take one off each side...

If it balances, the high/low side ball weighed different...

If still not...

take one more off each side...

one side will be higher...

take one off each side...

If it balances, the high/low side ball weighed different...

If still not...

reboot your server and see if the problem replicates...
