remember one thing here though ( the bigger the alloy the greater the risk of curb damage ) and the lower the profile the greater chance of a puncture when you hit the curb plus lots more but I wont put you off because they look nice

If you stagger the wheel sizes front to rear... you can cause damage to your differential if you've got Quattro.
This would only occur if you used tires that had a different rolling circumferance. www.tirerack.com has tire diameters and 'revolutions per mile' listed in their 'specs' for every tire... so if you do go with a staggered setup, be sure and consult that and make sure you get something with the same diameter.
If you aren't going staggered, then you're transmission will be completely unnaffected -- you're friend is on cheap crack.
