i think learning to get the car going without giving it gas will teach you to control you foot better. that is of course if your clutch isn't close to toast. i've driven several manual cars and if the clutch was in decent shape, i could at least keep the car on a slope with just the clutch and then once i gave it a little gas and let out of the clutch a little more, the car gets up and goes. if you constantly give it gas and then let the clutch out, you'll burn through the clutch much faster. usually you can feel vibrations through the steering wheel when the clutch grabs, that's when you can let go of the brake and give it some gas. staring at the rpm gauge helps too but try to keep you eyes on the road lol

how do you know when your clutch is going out? i have been worried about second too, if the clutch isnt all the way, yet past engagement it kinda grinds a little. very annoying and sounds and feels like the plates are grinding.

Ima get a High Compression clutch if mine goes out. makes everything so much easier and better and faster. i love hpc's!

What? You shouldn't be putting it into any gear unless the clutch pedal is to the floor...

The clutch will slip when it's on it's way out and your rpms will raise without the car speeding up. Usually is first noticeable in a high gear like 4th/5th under heavy load.
