New member, What should i get?
Hi, i'm new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself plus get a forum opinion. I've always beena fan of Audi, but never owned one. I've been mostly a BMW owner during the past.
I am currently looking for an econimic / affordable back up car, since i mostly drive a company vehicle during the whole week; and I'm taking this chance to look into Audis but i'm not sure what to expect. Since my budget is low, i'm thinking of an older A4, something around '96-'97.
What problems should i be expecting with this type of car? Is it a good choice to start with? I've heard from friends that Audis tend be brake down often, but i'm not sure how true this statement is. All cars brake, so i want to hear from the people that actually drive them.
Any recommendations, ideas, things i should look out for when buying one, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

welcome to the forums!
usually Off Topic is where the ignorant people hang out....so your question might get more attention in the A4 section.
my opinion is: probably like any used car, as long as you have a record that the car has been serviced properly, then it's just a throw of the dice if you have a good one or not. i know there are typical things that need replacing at 70,000 or 80,000 miles, but the experts are all over there in the A4 section and they can probably give you a list of what to expect that will need replaced.

If you get one and you like to mod get a 97 1.8t, do not get the V6 version, you might regret it.
As for things to watch out for the Timing Belt likes to be replaced every 70K or so, and I wanna say the control arms are a weakness to but I'm not sure if thats what I want to actually say.
In the end I'd say use the searchbar and see what happens.

*lol* OMFG Your 1st sentence made me laugh out so loud.
Anyways, Whatever you do don't get a 96 or 97 or a V6. Try and aim for a 98/99 1.8 Turbo A4. I can tell you since May 19th 2006 I have NOT HAD ONE SINGLE MAJOR ISSUE WITH MY CAR (knocks on wood) Just do your oil changes and it's all good.
Common things to look for
Turbo Wear
Control Arms
Timing Belt
Leaks
Electronic Errors/E.g. Shorts/things opening and closing without u telling it to
Test all lights, sunroof,LCD DISPLAY (if u get a cluster that has one)
Tread on tires
Clutch (if its manual)
