Autocross is a blast! I did it a bunch of times in my A4, stock suspension and brakes, always had a ton of fun. It's reasonably easy to be competitive within your class because a lot of it is about driver skill, especially on a well-planned course. You should look into the local chapter of the SCCA, they usually have at least one AutoX/Solo event per month.

I was looking around, and it looks like there is a club in both Salina and Topeka (an hour in opposite directions) with a couple GTGs in August and September I'm thinking about checking out. I've never done anything like it before, so I don't want to show up and make an *** out of myself (or bruise my ego and find out I'm not as good of a driver as I claim to be). Any pointers for a AutoX/ Solo n00b?

just drive the car like you know it, take the corners as you feel you can, you may spin out, but unlikely, but if you do, its fine. some of the pros i was driving with were spinnin out pushin it. The vettes that were with me had slicks, and the one that i beat had a cam, headers, and intake too! i was really happy! its such a good time i am now hunting for more lol...

Biggest thing is, don't get lost! LOL A lot of times there will be more than one run group; while one group is running the course, the other group/groups will be track workers - they post people around the track to re-set cones that get knocked over and such. If you've never done it before, it's a good idea to get into the later run group and be a track worker during the first. That way you can get a good look at where the course goes and kind of get a visual feel for what you'll be doing.

Once you're driving, focus on being fast but smooth - push it, but remember squealing tires = lost time

Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast... got it!

Squeeling tires, with a quattro? I don't make that much power!

Yeah, I've been looking into some events in the near future after I get home. I have to try it at least once. I can only imagine the adrenaline rush. Of course, i have a feeling I'll get hooked and it will be my new drug!
