It's a great method for DIY, but I hate sanding so I would rather spray.

There is new lacquer paint that can be used as a single stage and cost not much more than that stuff. Its also safe to paint in a garage or simular. PPG also has a cheap system that can cover a car with less than a gallon of paint and cost under $100

We sell the lacquer paint at my work. It's Duplicolor and is like 20 or 30 a quart. It supposedly works great and holds up really well. We sell it all the time, but I'm yet to hear a customer's opinion on it with my own ears.

From the couple car shows i have seen use it, it looks great (little better than the above) and is easier to do by far than traditional car base/topcoat

It's meant to be sprayed, but I'm sure it could be rolled just as easily, but it's pre-mixed.
