RE: More tales from the "Hood"
I've said it once, I'll say it again. Get a shotgun, like a Mossberg 500 or 590. The 500 series passed the military's 3000 round torture test, so I'd be willing to be my life on it.
Good job on calling the police and not actually showing your weapon to avoid further escalation of the situation. Did you get a concealed weapon permit yet? If I remember correctly, Oklahoma is a 'shall issue' state. If you meet the conditions to apply (basically the conditions to buy the handgun you just bought) then you are issued a permit.

We used that shotty in iraq, not sure which model, but a mossburg. That was a NICE gun.
I havent got the concealed permit yet, but as long as I stay in my own property I am legal to carry it, only if driving or going somewhere else does OK make you have the permit.

HOW TO INSTALL A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM
1. Go to a second-hand store and buy a pair of men's used work boots, size 14-16.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns 'N Ammo and the latest hunting magazine.
3. Put a giant dog dish next to the boots and magazine.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads: " Hey Big Mike: Slim, Tiny and I went for more ammo--Back in an hour. Don't mess with the Pitbulls. They attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up pretty bad. I don't think Killer took part in it, but I locked all four of them in the house just in case. You'd better wait outside"
Hope this helps you with your indigent and crackhead problems

Where on Gods green earth do you live?
Just move. You will be happier in the long run, and safer no doubt. I wouldn't want to put my family through that type of risk even if the house was given to me. There are many beautiful, safe places to live, just find one and move there.

I think parts of OK have developed a real serious Meth problem and that is what has turned a lot of those neighborhoods to $hit.
I would put the house up for sale and see what happens. Now that you are there, you can start looking around better at other neighborhoods. Sure, it's a huge pain in the ***, but it beats the hell out of what you have described so far in this hood. Here is a simple rule to live by - If you live somewhere where you feel like you need a gun - move. That beats that "better to have it an not need it" crap any day of the week.
Also, I was taught long ago to not let anyone know that you had a gun until you were firing it at them. Bulges and flashing a piece usually gets a person shot with their own gun. The only reason to have your piece out is to fire it. And you really don't want to kill anyone, so basically you want to avoid getting your piece out.

I know, that sounds like an a$$hole thing to say, or like some kinda macho BS, but it is not like that. This is my home, and I have dealt with ALOT worse people and situations in my time to let some dipshit punks try to intimidate me or my family in my own home. Not gonna happen. I am pretty sure most people would feel the same about that.

RE: More tales from the "Hood"
get a sign that says, "screw the dog, beware of owner" and get a nice NRA flag and hang it outside ur house. I would also get a few more guns, perhaps a shot gun for the mrs. nice point and shot and better chance of hitting something if she refuses to learn to shoot it, just teach her how to load unload, and fie if it needs to be done. Also a gate around ur house and driveway might not be a bad idea.
ooo and just electrify the fence

Not sure about the meth thing, but I would not doubt it. Since it is a military town, there are people from all over the country, not just the simple country folk. And they bring all kinds of bigger city problems than there should be here. As far as not showing the gun, I agree and disagree. It probably is better not to show it, but in my job we show a gun as a first step to controling a situation, then escalate from there. And as long as a shooting is justified, I dont mind. Its not the ideal way to handle things, and I know it would only escalate it further, but what are you gonna do?? It would not be my first time around the block. Just a different environment.

I don't doubt that you have ben in some dangerous situations where guns were necessary to have around, but you are in OK now. A shooting being justified could be a little more complicated. You can go to jail for shooting people on your lawn, even if they are armed. And who wants that bs?
Hey, I just don't want you to get into any trouble or anyone get hurt. You don't have to get down on the animals level. You stay above them and let the police take care of the scum of society. Don't worry about ideas like "respect" (and I put that in quotes because the way gangbangers use it is stupid) and all of that $hit from the street. You aren't Custer and you don't have to make any last stands to prove anything. Cops need something to do and the cowardly gangbangers run like little girls when they see the cops coming. So give them a call. Just my 2 cents.
