military guys
i have some questions. im currently looking for a job but there is a severe shortage in Tallahassee cause of so many college kids. So i was thinking of joining the military.
1- I do NOT wana go to iraq or anywhere out of town for that matter. Is that possible?
2- I'm currently enrolled at FSU and have class MW 3:30-630 and TR 3:30-4:50. Will i still be able to get a job in the military?
3- Which brach should i join?
4-What kind of money would i be making the first year?
thanx in advance for any help

RE: military guys
My personal opinion is just not to join, but that's just me. I think that although being short of cash is sort of hard times, joining the military would make them even harder. I personally don't see us coming out of Iraq any time soon.

yeah there's no way im going to iraq, thats why i wana know if its possible to not go to iraq, and what the time commitments are. like i dont wana have to be required to serve for the next 4 years. i got bigger plans in my future than the army. i got no problem being in the army while im in college but after that i wana move on to other things...unless there's a really high paying military job

RE: military guys
I have a cousin that was in the national guard, and he was pulling in $1k per week tax free, butthat was when he was in Iraq, so I don't really know. I'm not really sure about the time commitments, either. Whenhe was asked if he wanted to resign for another year, they were offering him a $15k bonus, but like I said, if he resigned, he would've been right back over there. I wouldn't want to go over there, either, if I were you. The whole situation over there sucks. I'm always paranoid that after I turn 18, they're gonna start drafting again. [:@]

I don't much see the point of us being over there. I think getting rid of Saddam is as good as it's gonna get. There's always gonna be fighting over there, we just don't need to be a part of it, nor can we ever completely stop it.

For your entire enlistment? No. It's happened, people have enlisted and have never been deployed, but thats rare. But the Reserves and National Guard do train more than just a weekend a month, they are also required to train for around 2 weeks straight a year (sometimes less, sometimes more).. this usually takes place in the summer.

Yes, the Reserves and National Guard. Don't even think about having that kind of schedule while Active, the best you'll be able to do while Active are online courses.. maybe coupled with night classes if you can handle that. Going to college while Active is very difficult, otherwise I'd be active right now.
3- Which brach should i join?
I can't tell you whats best for you. The least likely to get deployed or sent out of town as of today, Sept 11, 2007? I'd have to say the Air National Guard..
4-What kind of money would i be making the first year?
That depends mostly on your rank and branch. With college credits you'll most likely be bumped up in rank. The Reserves and National Guard doesn't pay much because it's only a weekend a month... for example, as an E3/PFC in the national guard, expect about $250 a weekend. Also, many states pay 100% tuition and fees or $4500 per semester (some states may differ). You will also get the GI Bill, which can be used for Books, added to the $4500... or just pocketed. So the Military can definitely help out with money.

If you don't want to get deployed while you're in school, you should consider ROTC. You will be able to complete school.. but be aware that your contract will be lengthy. Definitely not less than 4 years. Also, joining the military and not expecting to get deployed is very naive. I had the opportunity to go the Officer route with ROTC, but I prefer being enlisted much more.

If you really don't want to leave your town, at all, I'd suggest not joining.

RE: military guys
ok so if i decided to do ROTC, what would the requirements be? how long is my contract and what exactly does the contract entail? my roommate from first semester freshman year did that and he had to wake up every morning at like 4:00. would i also have to do that?
and if lets say i did army reserve. what would that entail? i heard you get paid by how many drills you do or something....and whats up with deployment if your a reserve? u can be deployed anytime? cuz i cant just leave college to go to iraq

RE: military guys
chaos,
a shortage of jobs at your age and career stage is not the best reason to join the ranks. Unemployment in Tallahassee is less than 3.5%. There are jobs for college kids to do to earn money while in college. Doesn't need to be the dream job, just something to pay the bills and some extra curricular activity. Finish college and the opportunties with more $ will be available. No bull, consider Pizza delivery or waiting tables/bartending. Easy cash for tips and you eat one or two meals a day for free. many of us have done it and faired well. PM me if you want some ideas.
