Like we used to say all the time at my old welding job (quit because I was under paid/appreciated)...

As long as you're not in massive debt, or have a family to support, you're really free to do what you want, where you want.
I got sick of my job doing aerospace welding and had a friend put a word in for me with his boss at a telecomm company 2 hrs away, days after put in my 2 week notice and switched. Worked 6 months at the new job, was making decent money, but was unsure of the future of the business, so I put the word out again I was interested in a job change. A week went by, I checked out a new place (a total of 4 1/2 hrs from home), committed, and then went back and put my 2 weeks notice in at the telecomm place. Total move took me from central NY, to Albany NY, to Burlington VT.
If you're single, keep your options open. Hell, I even considered moving to New Zealand.
