Um, days of yore?? Merc is crap. It is a rebadged Ford. That isnt a bad thing, I love Fords (hence the name), but aside from trucks and SUV's mustangs and the now discontinued GT, they really dont have much to offer. I dare you to show me evidence otherwise.
And have you ever driven a Hyundai? They are cheap and quality is WAY up compared to their days of yore, good prices and great warrenty, but they drive like ****.

If she likes to keep her cars a long time, then I would get something Japanese and run away from all Mercury dealers. An Accord starts at around 18,000, so she could get one with some nice options for 25,000.

I can't believe I am actually going to say this but......the new design looks pretty decent, and you know it is going to be a solid car.

How much is an Acura TSX?
How much is an Acura TSX?
that was the first car that came to mind when she told me what she wanted, but i guess they start around 28-29 and a decent model would be 35+

What about the Ford 500 or the Impala? The Impala is the best sedan Chevy has churned out in years, its cheap, reasonably reliable, safe, gets decent fuel economy and they have the SS version back out now. You can get 2 year old V8 Lincoln LS for under 25K, easy. The 2001's are down in the 10-12K range already, thank God for crap American resale value.
Does it absolutely have to be brand new? A lightly used 300C, GS300, IS300, 5 series, 3 series, CTS, or S-type are all within her range, decently powerful, stylish, and time-proven reliable.

How about a nissan maxima. My mom drives the gxe, man what a nice ride.
Fast and handels great. I have driven it in all types of weather not one bit of trouble. The car itself has not had any major problems, knock wood.
Regular maintenance stuff since purchased is all. Its the old body style.
