The PFT consist of Pull ups, Abdominal Crunches, and a 3 mile run. It uses a 300 point system: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/marines/l/blfitmale.htm
To be competitive for promotion in the Marine Corps you will need to score at least a 250 on this test. Very few people ever get 300. After 8 years, my best score was a 297. I lost 3 points on the 3 mile run. I finished it in 18 minutes and 26 seconds.
Also you will have to shoot "Rifle Expert" in boot camp if you even wanted to consider anything to do with marksmanship. Like I said before, If you want a no BS answer ask me, not the recruiter.

Just joinin on the congrats. good luck man. My gf's brother is currently on his second tour in iraq. His first tour he was a border patrol guard between iraq and syria. he said it got pretty intense at times, fools would come up and throw home made bombs and ish but they could not return fire unless a syrian actually crossed into iraq territory. i couldnt handle that man, id be like, whoops, trigger finger slipped while i was laying on top of my post with my .50 cal haha.
anyways, good luck, as suggested by a few others i would start running now, doing push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups, my gf's bro said that was the one thing he regretted not doing enough of before boot camp.

Helo sounds good. I have an A&P cert. If I joined right now I'd be an E-3 right off the bat, and If I finished college I'd be an O-3. Pick something you love that you can make a career out of in the real world!

They will start you out with a mile and 1/2 run and build your endurance from there. Be prepared to get up at 0 dark 30 and, "run all day until the running is done!" You will also have a 5 mile motivation run at the end of boot camp, at least they use to. I graduated boot camp from Paris Island back in 1993. The traditions are all the same. The training may be different. Also be ready to do a few forced marches. Basically you will put on full combat gear and go on a few 10-25 mile hikes. Your feet will look like 10 pounds of ground beef when your done. If you decide to go infantry, be ready for 4 years of this.
