Make the site read-only

Is there a way to temporarily make your forum read-only? Or is it impossible?

One of my friends had a question alike. He wanted to create a website for or about his wedding. The main thing he had to install is the plugin that would have helped him not to be accessible to anyone other than those that have received an invite with the website address and password to access it. I know that his solution came up due to the WordPress web design and development company. Sincerely, how good it is to have such services that may give you reasonably good advice no matter what problem you are coping with.
