so you are going to by a car here in the states and then ship it to Europe for road trips?? I'm a bit confused.

I was all ready to come say DURANGO!!! but then it's the opposite of what you said you wanted. Since it's not diesel, not new enough, or not fuel efficient enough (since the smallest engine gets like 19MPG) But i love my truck for towing.

i am with Colin - i was about to say american SUV. i can seat 5 and put surfboards and all the gear in the back, or pack up for a ski trip and still seat 8.

i think Krypt is right, the TDI just came to the US this year, 3.0. I was thinking about selling my yukon XL, and was looking at the Q7 a couple of months ago. Tough to spend more, and lose space.

how about a VW minivan - is it the routan? we rented one in Hawaii last time. roomy and not so minivan-ish. even fit a 9' longboard inside..

Hummer? However, I think it is only a 5 seater. Might have room in the back for more

To clear up some confusion, yes I would be buying in the US, shipping to the middle east, but home is England. So lots to see between here and England. Apart from the oil rich exporting countries, fuel is expensive everywhere else.

I had a Durango. It was a fun car, but with a petrol engine it wouldn't make a good option for what I am looking for.

When I heard TDI Q7 I thought it was the V12 TDI and was thinking 6.0l v12 how is that going to help on fuel??

It would be much cheaper to get a 2nd hand vehicle there though........ the kind of car your looking for asks a huge premium here.
